7 Must Have Living Room Accessories
Decorating is a very personal exercise (or at least it should be). You decide what items go into your home, from the furniture, to the rugs, to the lights, to the accessories – its totally up to you. But despite the fact that you’re free to decorate with whatever you want, there are a few essential items every livingroom should have. Having these items in your livingroom will ensure that no matter what the style it will always look its best.
1- Statement Lighting
Every home needs at least one really great light. It could be a statement chandelier, a sculptural table lamp, a modern floor lamp, or a really great sconce. A unique, statement piece will be a super conversation starter and will add some wow factor to the space.
2- A Tray
Yes! A TRAY. Trays are great for a couple of reasons. The first is that they’re obviously great for carrying multiple items at the same time, but even better than that, they can be used to corral accessories on a table surface and lend a sense of organization to decorative vignettes. When multiple items are placed on a tray they instantly look better. And trays are also decorative accessories in their own right so find something in a style and color you really like.
3- Something Vintage
Every home (in some cases every room) needs to have something vintage. It could be a piece of furniture, a decorative accessory, a piece of fabric framed and hung on the wall – anything. Vintage pieces add a sense of history and character that can’t be found with new items.
4- Personal Art
Hanging art on the wall is a great way to add personality and character to a space. It's even better if it’s not the kind that’s mass produced and sold in big box stores. The term “personal art” means it’s something unique to you (and no, it doesn’t mean you have to have any artistic talent). It could be personal photos framed and hung on the wall, something made by you or a loved one, a wall-hanging purchased on a vacation, or something else personal and meaningful. The idea is that it not something that anyone can just go to a store and purchase. This is what will define your living room from everyone else’s and make the room unique to your home.
5- Window Treatments
Empty windows are cold and impersonal. Put some sort of window treatment, whether it's drapes, blinds or shutters, on every single window in your livingroom. There are tons of options and what you choose should be based on personal style, the style of the room, the shape of the window and the amount of privacy you desire.
6- Throw Pillows
Throw pillows are important for a couple of reasons. The first is comfort. Even the most comfy sofa and chairs can be made more so with some extra pillows. Sometimes your back might need extra support, or you might want to take a nap and have a pillow to rest your head on. Whatever the reason, a couple of pillows either on the sofa or chairs are worth having. The second reason is decorative. Pillows offer a wonderful opportunity to bring in different colors, textures and patterns without making a large commitment. Pillows can be changed with the seasons, or just whenever the mood strikes.
7- Something Living
Every living room needs to have something that’s alive in it (other than you). Floral arrangements, no matter what their size, breathe instant life into a room and look stunning on coffee tables and mantles. (Tip: if you’re placing an arrangement on a coffee/ centre table keep it low so as not to overwhelm or block sight lines). The other thing that’s great about flowers is that they’re good for experimenting with colors that wouldn’t normally go together. You can add flowers of any color to any room and they’ll pretty much always look great.
Home accessories are what gives your home personality and character. These accessories are necessary to reflect who you are and what's really important to your family. It's the accessories you choose that distinguish your house from your neighbor's and make you feel like you're really home.
